Hi ringscape,

We thought it best to explain to all of JMJ's fans worldwide why videos have been removed from YouTube (and elsewhere).

Just so that the position is clear, the copyright in the original OXYGENE master recordings are owned by Francis Dreyfus Music ("FDM") and the copyright in the musical compositions that make up OXYGENE are co-owned and published by FDM. As such, anyone wanting to synchronise OXYGENE master recordings and / or musical compositions with film footage, needs permission from FDM (ie. as opposed to simply receiving permission from JMJ himself).

That being said, FDM are most definitely pro-fans (not anti-fans as has been suggested) and, as such, if you wish to synchronise OXYGENE recordings or compositions with film / video footage - assuming, of course, that your usage is not commercial / for profit and that you are not adapting JMJ's music in any way - then you should simply provide an industry standard, courtesy credit for FDM as the copyright owner. As JMJ has already given his permission via his YouTube video message to fans worldwide, the appropriate credit should be as follows : "Copyright recordings and music reproduced by kind permission of Francis Dreyfus Music and Jean Michel Jarre".

Should you wish to use OXYGENE for commercial purposes -- or should you wish to adapt OXYGENE - you will need to request permission in writing : for the timebeing, any requests for permission to commercially exploit or adapt OXYGENE should simply be e-mailed to websheriff@websheriff.com.

Whilst writing and for your further info, there is currently a legal dispute between FDM and JMJ in relation to the so-called "OXYGENE 2007" album : put simply for now, FDM's claim against JMJ is that the 2007 version of OXYGENE is largely based upon the original master recording of OXYGENE from 1976 and that, as such, the 2007 version is not a re-recording at all but merely a re-mixed and digitally remastered version of the original OXYGENE. For the avoidance of doubt, JMJ denies this and the matter may well end-up being decided in a Court of law, but we shall endeavour to keep you - the fans - updated on the position as the dispute / case develops.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this post and for understanding the difficulties involved in these (complex) copyright issues.

With Regards to All JMJ Fans Worldwide,
